Basic Commands

man

Displays the user manual of any command that we can run on the terminal.

Syntax: man [option] command

<aside> 💡 $man man command can be used to obtain the manual for the man command.

whatis

Gives one line manual page descriptions.

Syntax: whatis command

Example:

$ whatis ls
 ls (1)           - list directory contents

pwd

Print name of current/working directory. It prints the path of the working directory, starting from the root.

Syntax: pwd

Example:

~$ pwd
/home/shathin

ls

List a directory's contents and its properties like permissions, owner, etc.

Syntax: ls [option] [directory]
